Bone Mineral Density
Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is the single most reliable clinical indicator of osteoporosis and fracture risk. BMD testing is a technology that is widely under used. The lower the bone density, the higher the risk of fracture.

In short, because we are the area's leading experts in diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
Vertebral Fracture Assessment
We are very pleased to announce that we now offer patients, Vertebral Fracture Assessment (VFA) that is done along with their Bone Mineral Density Testing. VFA is a method of lateral spine imaging to help identify vertebral compression deformities (i.e., fractures). Although two thirds of vertebral fractures go clinically unrecognized, they are common and important to diagnose. They predict future fractures, are associated with increased morbidity and mortality and can be prevented with appropriate pharmacologic therapy. VFA takes approximately 5-7 minutes to position and scan the patient.
The Difference at AOC
A bone density scan done at AOC provides much more information than other centers in northern Michigan. Most patients will receive scans of the spine, both hips and the forearm. In addition, testing can be done for lateral spine, total body bone density and body fat composition.
A customized, comprehensive report with assessment of the data and latest treatment recommendations is available the next business day.
BMD services are provided at the lowest cost of any BMD center in the region. All insurances are accepted (cash discount option is available for those without insurance).
Are You at Risk?
You should consider having a bone density test done if you fall under any of the following risk categories:
- Caucasian women
- Post-menopausal women
- History of fractured bones
- Loss of body height
- Increased curvature of the spine
- Low body weight (under 130 lbs)
- Family history of osteoporosis
- Smoking
- History of breast or prostate cancer
- Drugs such as cortisone, prednisone, thyroid, and anticonvulsants
- Rheumatoid arthritis

"As in the past, we will always continue to provide bone density testing regardless of ability to pay."
